BLOG or WIKI?

*** Draft 20080624-v1 ***

Askain asks:
Which is the best tool to start Internet advice: BLOG or WIKI?

Great question.

First, for those new to the terms BLOG and WIKI, here's a very basic definition:

A WIKI is a web site which allows users to add and edit content collectively.  It's best for teams, collaboration and group think.  The best known WIKI site is www.wikipedia.org.

A BLOG is a frequently updated online journal or diary.  It's best for an individual who wants to share their life, experiences or in our case, expertise.

So which do I use and recommend for Internet advice entrepreneurs?  Both can be useful, but overall I recommend you use a blog as your core site.

Why?

3 reasons:

(1) Ease of setup and use.  The software I use and recommend is WordPress (www.wordpress.org).  The hosting company I use offers it as a one-click install.  There are also lots of themes and plugins to customize it.

(2) Search engine friendly.  My blogs get indexed into the search engines faster than my regular sites.

(3) Flexibility.  Wordpress has really evolved.  Using themes and plugins like Semiologic, you can make it look and function in a wide variety of ways.
Beyond the Question

Thinking about this, the logical next question would be:

What are some of the ways you can use a blog to build your Internet advice business?

Here are a few thoughts to get you started:

(1) Demonstrate your expertise.  Write an article or add audio or video.

(2) Build a list of interested prospects.  Add a subscription box to your site using a service like www.infobee.com.

(3) Point readers to your online classes and content.  For example, you can add a blog post about a class you're leading here at learnhub.  In the post or at the end, you can link to your learnhub page.

(4) Write a book.  One of my client recently turned his 50 best posts into a physical book using www.lulu.com.

(5) Expand your reach.  One of the great things about blogs is commenting and linking.  You can build awareness of you and what you do by commenting on other people's blog post.  Others can also highlight your articles by linking to their favorite posts from their blogs.  Both can bring more people to your site.
